You may recall that prior to COVID-19, employers were responsible for paying Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) to eligible workers and had to bear the cost themselves. During the pandemic, however, the Government introduced schemes whereby you were able to claim up to 2 weeks’ SSP back if it was related to absence due to COVID. That included where staff had to self-isolate as well as when they were ill with the virus.
The rebate scheme is coming to an end shortly and you will not be able to claim back SSP for any absences after 17th March 2022.
Also, from 17th March, the rules revert to SSP only being payable from the fourth day of absence irrespective of the reason for absence. Under the current scheme, it is payable from day one for COVID related absence.
